Six diesel-electric lightships were built in 1929-1930 to replace existing steam-powered craft. These vessels served without incident into the 1970's, except for the "Nantucket", which was accidentally rammed and sunk by RMS "Olympic", sister to the "Titanic", in 1934. Two remain as museum ships.
